Protecting Your Computer

Here are some basics to protecting your personal computer.

  • Use a personal firewall and keep it up-to-date.
  • Install and maintain current anti-virus protection.
  • Install and maintain current anti-spyware protection.
  • Turn off or uninstall all features not in use – including unused software.
  • Keep the Operating System and all applications patched and up-to-date with the latest, tested releases. Use automatic updates if available.
  • Require unique login access for each user, do not allow generic accounts.
  • Use Strong passwords for all accounts. Change default passwords on system accounts.
  • Backup important files
